Last month I launched a contest for Survival of the Able, and upcoming game I’ve been working on. Unfortunately the contest didn’t have any entries, but the character sheet was downloaded nearly two dozen times and I did receive a few pieces of feedback at least.
In the coming months I’ll talk more about the game and its design decisions. For now, here’s a brief overview.
Background and Goals
My primary goal for Survival of the Able is to give players an experience of what it’s like to have a disability. Most RPGs treat disabilities and drawbacks, hindrances, faults, etc. and assign them numerical penalties to ability checks–and that’s exactly what I wanted to avoid with this game. Being blind shouldn’t just be a -4 penalty to ranged attacks. Being deaf shouldn’t just be a 20% chance to miscast spells with verbal components. It’s so much more than that. And as … Continue reading
Even if you’re a regular follower of my blog and social media posts, chances are good you haven’t heard of Survival of the Able until now. It’s a game I’ve been working on quietly for a while and have only mentioned in private to a few people or publicly with few details. Consider this an official announcement that I’m working on a brand new game with a familiar but original system.
I’m going to be taking this game for playtesting to the upcoming Gamestorm convention in March. That means I’ve been hard at work getting the game into a playable alpha state and, recently, creating a character sheet for use at the table.
Because I haven’t told you anything about the game yet, I thought it’d … Continue reading

You may be familiar with our Tutorial Tuesday series which provides a lot of great information about how to create accessible RPG layouts. I’ve been hard at work collecting, categorizing, and updating these tutorials and putting them into a single eBook. Now available at DriveThruRPG, the Accessible Guide to RPG Layout is a great resource for any small press game designer.
The original tutorials will always be available free of charge here on the website, but purchasing the eBook gets you some additional benefits. The articles have been rearranged and grouped into a logical structure, making it easier to work through the process if you’re following along. The content has also been updated with current links and tangential sidebar information that helps support some of … Continue reading

Now available from Accessible Games, Psi-punk: World’s Edge Arena takes players to the city of Punta Arenas, Chile, where they compete for extraordinary wealth. The book includes rules for arena combat, plenty of monsters and human opponents to fight, … Continue reading
Thursday, December 3rd, is the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities. To celebrate, and to bring awareness to gamers with disabilities, we’re selling all of our PDFs for 50% off from DriveThruRPG.
The theme for this year is Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities.
“The right to participate in public life is essential to create stable democracies, active citizenship and reduce inequalities in society.”
It’s every individual’s responsibility to be inclusive of people from all walks of life. As gamers, we’ve been exposed to a lot of discussion about the rights of women and people of color–and to be sure, discussion of those rights is absolutely imperative–but we don’t often talk about the rights of people with disabilities. Too few games are … Continue reading
Psi-punk Archetypes: Promoter, the third mini sourcebook in the Archetypes line of character-centric supplements, is now available in PDF.
This book is all about Promoters, characters who make it their job to make others look good. Though they tend to avoid danger themselves, Promoters bolster their teammates, defame their enemies, negotiate for better paying gigs, and wow the crowds with flashy performances.
In addition to skill suggestions, you’ll find new Gifts, Faults, and Gear useful for Promoter characters. These characters are masters of crowd manipulation, making them perfectly suited to the upcoming World’s Edge Arena setting for Psi-punk.
